Tenerife and Gran Canaria continue to fight Aedes mosquitoes, which transmit dangerous diseases such as yellow fever, Zika, dengue fever, and chikungunya. In 2019, the Canary Islands Ministry of Health declared Fuerteventura and La Palma free of these pathogenic insects. However, several specimens of Aedes albopictus, known as the tiger mosquito, were recently discovered on Tenerife . These harmful insects can reach the archipelago by hiding in the folds of clothing of migrants arriving from mosquito-infested areas. These mosquitoes must be eradicated.
