Yomiji Garden is considered one of the finest botanical gardens in Asia. Located on Jeju Island, the indoor section of the garden is housed in a modern glass greenhouse resembling a giant octopus. The greenhouse was built relatively recently, in 1992, while the garden opened somewhat earlier, in 1989. While the garden is relatively new, it is home to over two thousand species of rare plants from around the world.
The indoor section of Yomiji Garden is divided into several greenhouse pavilions, arranged as if within the "tentacles" of an octopus. Tourists circle them. At the center of the circle is a huge pavilion with an observation platform in the middle. In good weather, the observation platform, accessible by elevator, offers a magnificent view of the Jungmun Tourist Complex and Cheonjeyeon Waterfall. When visibility is good, the seashore, Mount Hallasan, and Marado Island are visible. Among the pavilions surrounding the observation platform are a cactus garden, a flower garden, a lily pond, and a subtropical garden with fruit plants. In poor weather, there's no need to climb up: the observation deck has no open area; it's entirely glass, and the glass fogs up in the rain.
In addition to the permanent section of the garden, it hosts seasonal exhibitions. The outdoor section of the Yomiji Botanical Garden includes Korean, Italian, and Japanese gardens, as well as a formal French-style garden and, of course, the Jeju Island Nature Garden. A tourist train runs between the indoor and outdoor gardens.
