The name Yongdusan Park comes from the Korean word Yondu (dragon's head), as the hill on which it is located resembles the head of a dragon emerging from the sea. It is said that a large temple for Japanese monks once stood on this hill. The observation tower offers a magnificent panorama of the monument to Admiral Yi Sun-sin, the city bell, the flower clock, the Museum of Musical Instruments of the World, the Exhibition Hall of Model Boats, the Art Museum, and the Book Café. All of these sites are located within the park. The observation tower is 68 meters tall, but due to the terrain, it is 120 meters above sea level. The observation deck is perched on a long column resting on a base similar in shape to the Dabotap Pagoda, one of the two famous pagodas in the Bulguksa Temple complex. In the dark, the tower is beautifully illuminated.
The Admiral Yi Sun-sin Monument, located in the park, was erected to honor his military service in defending the Fatherland during the Joseon Dynasty, when Admiral Yi Sun-sin achieved a complete victory over the enemy during the Japanese invasion of Korea in 1592. The local town bell was cast with funds raised by the residents of Busan . It is rung at midnight three times a year: March 1st, Independence Day, and New Year's Day. The Flower Clock is the only "flowerbed" clock in Korea with two hands; it is surrounded by beautiful flowers year-round. The Museum of Musical Instruments of the World displays a variety of instruments made, sometimes from exotic materials, such as parts of the human skeleton or rat skin. The first floor houses an exhibition of wind instruments, and the second floor features percussion instruments, which visitors are welcome to try out.
The boat model exhibition features over 80 different models, including traditional Korean boats (hemp sailboats, roofed boats), military vessels, and famous cruise ships such as the Titanic and the Santa Maria. The park also features a monument commemorating the student uprising of April 19, 1960 (the Sailgu Revolution, which forced President Syngman Rhee to resign).
Locals love Yongdusan Park and often visit it in their free time. It's not just the buildings and monuments that are beautiful here: about 70 different species of trees have been planted and are growing. The park's Arts Plaza traditionally hosts various performances featuring Korean folk arts, such as music and dance. Most of these performances take place on weekends from March to November.
